In Windsor we visit Windsor Castle, Queen Elizabeth II's main residence outside the capital, we wander through sumptuous State Apartments admiring treasures from the Royal Collection, then visit St. George's Chapel, dedicated to prayers for the Monarch and the Knights of the Order of the Garter.

Sample 4 hour tour 2. A pleasant half day spent conjuring up the lives of Kings at Hampton Court Palace, one time home of Henry VIII and later William III and his wife Queen Mary, with splendid gardens and a Real tennis court, can be rounded off by finding our way out of the hedge maze.

Sample 9 hour tour 1. Oxford, the ancient university town of dreaming spires with hidden gardens and quadrangles, can be combined with a tour of Cotswold villages, perhaps Chipping Camden or Broadway with honey coloured stone houses, roofed with thatch or Cotswold stone tiles. Alternatively, nearbyBlenheim Palace, home of the Dukes of Marlborough, provides a splendid example of 18C architecture. Smaller but no less impressive is Sudeley Castle, also within easy reach, and once the home of Henry VIII's last wife, Katharine Parr.

Sample 9 hour tour 2. Cambridge, England's other prestigious ancient university city, was home to thousands of US airmen during World War II. Combine this with a visit to the National Stud at Newmarket or a visit to magnificent Ely Cathedral. Nearby Duxford houses most of the Imperial War Museum's military aircraft, armoured fighting vehicles and midget submarines.

Medieval Canterbury with its magnificent Cathedral - where Thomas a Becket was murdered in 1170 - was a world-renowned Pilgrimage centre during medieval days, and later the focus of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
